I love speaking at schools, libraries, and conferences! My ideal school visit allows me to work with each student twice. Once they become excited about poetry in the assembly, they want to write in the writing workshop, where I focus on family and metaphor. It is best to divide students by grade levels, with up to 1000 students in an assembly and up to 100 students in a writing workshop. Typically I will start a school visit with a 45-minute all-school assembly followed by three 45-minute grade-level workshops. When I speak at libraries and conferences (requiring overnight travel), I often am asked if I will speak at local schools as part of my daily fee. Absolutely! I often speak at a library or conference in the morning, and then spend the afternoon at one or two neighborhood schools. Schools usually contribute to my daily fee in this case, which helps the library or conference budget. Single Program (for schools, libraries or conferences) Within 2 hours of Seattle, WA or Princeton, NJ $1000 Same-day air-travel required $1500 Overnight travel required $2000 One Day Visit (up to 4 presentations) Within 2 hours of Seattle, WA or Princeton, NJ $1750 Overnight travel required $2500 Each additional presentation (beyond 4 presentations) $500 Two Day Visit (at the same school) Within 2 hours of Seattle, WA or Princeton, NJ $2500 Overnight travel required $4000 Note: I live in Princeton, NJ but try to visit my mother in Seattle once a month; this is why I have listed Seattle and Princeton as my two “homes.” I charge for travel expenses from Newark, NJ when air travel is required (except for destinations within 2 hours driving time of Seattle) Schools use a variety of sources to sponsor my programs, including Title I, district, PTA and GATE funds, and grants from local business groups. Please invite representatives from your funding source to "preview" my assembly or workshop at another school, or contact my references. |
