Janet Wong wrote this book because Margaret Chodos-Irvine wanted to illustrate a counting book. Janet thought that hide-and-seek would make a perfect setting for this book, since children count while they play hide-and-seek, and they love playing the game. Younger children enjoy the game that Margaret built into her illustrations: the color of the number on each page gives a clue. If the number is pink (as it is with 3), children need to look for 3 pink things on the page (the styrofoam peanuts). They often guess the pompoms!! when they see the 7/8 double spread
but have them count the pompoms (8) and look for 7 YELLOW-orange things. Immediately after that clue, someone will spot the pencils!
Older childrenand adultscan use this book as a writing prompt to help them remember their favorite childhood games.
Reviews & Comments
"While Dad's cookies bake, he and his son play a game of hide-and-seek. He counts from 1 to 10 as the boy and his dog look for a good place to hideperhaps under the sink, or behind a tree, or in a box. "Hide-and-seek means/squeeze yourself small,/roll yourself tight/into a ball
." They finally settle under the covers on the big bed, and Dad begins to hunt for them. The game ends when the oven bell rings and the treats are ready to eat. The book is attractively designed, and children will enjoy finding something to count on each page or spread as they anticipate "Ready or not, here I come!"
--School Library Journal
"The rhythmic words capture the breathless excitement of searching and hiding, and Chodos-Irvine's prints, in her signature style of simple, dynamic shapes and bright, saturated hues, match the vibrant energy and elemental sounds."
