GRUMP comes from Janet's memories of herself as a new mothertired, grouchy, and unable to make her bouncy baby take a nap. "Each time I lowered his drowsy little head into the crib, his eyes would open wide and fill with tears!"
This book was illustrated by John Wallace with a sometimes less-than-grumpyeven somewhat happy-looking!mother.
Comments from the Author
By the time my son was born, I had already worked for several years as a lawyer and written and sold one whole collection of poetrybut taking care of my small bundle of energy was my hardest job ever. We had little in the way of child care, and I routinely transformed into a nasty troll about 4pm, when I realized that yet another day would come and go without even the tiniest nap. Babies are supposed to sleep a lot, I kept telling myselfso why won't HE? Things turned out fine in the end, of course. But I wish I had been a bit better at caging the grump in me!
